Paper vs Canvas Prints: How to Choose the Right Art for Your Space

Paper vs Canvas Prints: How to Choose the Right Art for Your Space

Choosing artwork is already a personal decision.
But once you’ve found a piece you love, another question often comes up…

Should I choose paper or canvas?

If you’ve ever felt unsure, you’re not alone.
This isn’t just about materials — it’s about how the artwork will live in your space.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the differences in a simple way, so you can choose what feels right for your home and your lifestyle.

WHAT IS A PAPER PRINT?

Paper prints are created on high-quality fine art paper, designed to capture detail, colour, and texture beautifully.

They are usually framed behind glass or acrylic.

Why people love paper prints:

  • Crisp detail and colour clarity
  • Clean, refined, gallery-style finish
  • Flexible framing options
  • Often more affordable (great for starting your collection)

A note on framing

One of the biggest advantages of paper prints is how customisable they are.

You can choose the frame style, and also the amount of white space (mat) around the artwork — and this can completely change how it feels:

  • More space → calm, minimal, gallery-like
  • Less space → stronger, more impactful

It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference.

Feels like: elegant, minimal, intentional

 WHAT IS A CANVAS PRINT?

Canvas prints are printed on textured canvas fabric and stretched over a wooden frame.

They don’t require glass and are ready to hang as they are.

Why people love canvas prints:

  • Rich, painterly texture
  • Softer, more organic feel
  • No glare (great for bright spaces)
  • Ready to hang, no framing needed

A note on framing

With canvas prints, the look is more about the edge and depth of the piece rather than external framing.

You can choose:

  • Clean, frameless edges for a modern look
  • Or a floating frame for a more refined finish

This changes how the artwork sits in your space:

  • Frameless → relaxed, contemporary, effortless
  • Framed (floating frame) → polished, elevated, more defined

Canvas prints are ideal if you want something simple, impactful, and ready to live in your space without extra decisions.

Feels like: warm, expressive, statement-making

WHAT ABOUT PRICE?

Price is often part of the decision — and it’s completely valid to consider.

But instead of thinking about which is better, it can help to think about what feels right for where you are right now.

Generally speaking:

Paper prints

  • More affordable entry point
  • Great if you’re starting your art collection
  • Ideal if you like flexibility (changing frames or rotating pieces)

Canvas prints

  • Higher investment
  • Feels closer to owning an original
  • Designed to be more of a statement piece in your space

A gentle way to think about it

You don’t have to “get it perfect.”

Some collectors start with paper prints, then later invest in canvas or original works as their connection deepens.

Others go straight for canvas because they know they want that presence in their space. Both are valid.

What matters most

It’s not about choosing the “right” option in a technical sense.

It’s about choosing something that:

  • fits your current lifestyle
  • feels aligned with your space
  • and most importantly…
  • makes you feel something every time you walk past it

A NOTE FROM ME

When I create my work, I think about how it will live beyond the canvas — in your home, in your everyday moments.

Whether you choose paper or canvas, what matters most is this:

Does it make you feel something every time you see it?

That’s always the right choice.
